Android 5.1 has been making the news around the web ever since it was first spotted with the Android One devices launched in Indonesia. But Google took to its blog just today to unveil the new version of its mobile operating system.
According to the Vice President of Android Platform, the new version Android 5.1 Lollipop brings a small number of new features as well as improved stability and performance. A new Device Protection feature enables the Android device to be locked in case of loss or theft. The best thing about the Device Protection is this lock cannot be lifted even if factory reset is performed.
Another neat feature is the native support for dual SIM, HD voice for devices that have the hardware capability and the carrier support, and other small changes to make Android more stable. Google said in its blog post that the new update is rolling out today. Other sources speculate that Nexus 4, 5, and 7 will start receiving Android 5.1 Lollipop update starting today as well.
Over all, Android 5.1 is not that big of an update to be excited about. But whether other manufacturers like Samsung and HTC adopt the new version and release update to their smartphones that are getting Android Lollipop remains to be seen.
